My Running Goals for 2013
Now it is time to look ahead.
I purposely chose this picture of my Grandchildren as my first image of 2013, they represent the future to me and that is what this post is all about – the future.
For me it works better to make my running goals public and then review them each month when I do my monthly update. That accountability thing. 🙂
Keep running fun – It is not a job. Running is something that I love to do. Focus more on what I enjoy about running:
- the challenges it offers
- the camaraderie
- laugh at the stupid things that I sometimes do while running
The last one is why I joined and I am still a member in good standing of the – Idiot’s Running Club, to remind me to not take running so seriously. It is great to work hard at running, but take time to enjoy it too.

Be positive, be strong and keep smiling = great things can happen :-). This is pretty self-explanatory.
At times we all sometimes lose track of who we are and what is important to us – at least I know I have.
I am very comfortable with who I have become. I am not perfect and still have a LOT of room for growth, but it is when I stray away from being me, that I stop enjoying my life. This doesn’t mean that I will limit myself, but that I will remain true to the beliefs and principles that I have developed.
I am someone who enjoys having fun, laughing with others and at myself. Yes, I have a personality, opinions and a life beyond the Internet and running. I am good at many things and suck at others, and yes I make mistakes, but I learn from them.
No I am not usually the life of the party, but am not totally boring either. I am that guy off to the side watching what is going on, is one of the first to leave and yes I am comfortable with myself when no one else is around. My word means a lot to me and I don’t give it, unless I mean to. I strongly believe in mean what you say and say what you mean philosophy, whether it is when I say or write it, but I have to remember that being tactful thing. I also believe that I have to take responsibility for the choices I make good or bad – they are my choices.
Some people might find me stand-offish or aloof, but actually it is more than a little shyness and preferring to wait for someone else to make the first move or comment. I don’t want to be considered a “bother” or annoying to anyone and that attitude might be and has been misinterpreted.
I will not sweat the small stuff:
Life is full of little annoyances that are more a pain in the butt than anything. I plan to use the “will it matter a year from now?” attitude a lot more often.
I will control my social media presence:
This is one of those things that has become a recurrent issue for me ever since 2008 and I whined about it again just last week. It seems social media is a lot like mowing the lawn in summer, unless you continually keep after it, it quickly becomes unmanageable and becomes a lot of work to get it so you can really use your yard again.
Mowing the lawn, seems like a good analogy about how you have to maintain your presence on social media sites to me and I do plan to do a better job of maintaining it to reasonable levels, that work for me. I might not be as active on all the social media sites, as I prioritize my time more – which is okay since it is my choice.
Improve my running form.
I am just going to run relaxed this year. Yes I still heel strike too much, but as long as I don’t over stride and run with a higher cadence, I think that I will survive with my current form.
Continue to participate in the social aspects of running.
Participate in my online running and healthy-living communities on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and maybe start using the new social side of the Garmin site, since that will be my Running Website for most of my data analysis. Run in local races and stick around afterwards to talk and gab with other runners, see where the Central Maine Striders are headed (help where I can) and continue to search for that elusive running group to join.
My measurable 2013 Goals
- Run at least 2,013 miles in 2013.
- Run at least 300 days in 2103.
- Run a sub 20:00 5K at the Joseph’s 5K in Fairfield in April
- Run a 10K sub 45:00.
- Run a sub 1:35:00 at the Rail Trail Half Marathon in Augusta in June
- Run a sub 3:30:00 at the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. in October.
- Run at least 13 races in 2012.
- Stay under 150 pounds all year
The reality is that none of these goals are earth-shattering, they more continuing to improve on the progress that I made in 2011 and 2012. Isn’t that what we are supposed to do, keep working on things to make us better – both as runners and people.
Sometimes I think that we focus too much on only one facet of our lives and it negatively impacts other potentially more important ones…family, interpersonal relationships, work, etc. I don’t plan to neglect those other parts of my life, but this blog is about running and while it might seem as though that is all I focus on – it isn’t.
I wish everyone a very Happy New Year. I sincerely hope that it brings prosperity, achievement of your own goals (as long as you are willing to do the work to achieve them) and that we all take responsibility for the choices we make.
