Yes I am Wimpy – RunLog 3-4-17

Okay, I decided to do my run on the treadmill today – which means in some circles I am definitely a wimp!!!

Okay – I accept and own it and you know something I don’t really care. πŸ™‚

When Bennie and I walked this morning, it was 3*F with the wind chills driving feels like temps down into the -15 to -20*F range. My face hurt after being outside for less than 5 minutes and while we walked down to the first gate. Until we turned around it was a brutal walk.

Then a couple of hours later, Mary, Bennie and I walked up the snowmobile trail, if anything the winds had gotten worse and while the thermometer said it was 8*F the winds drove it far down into the negative numbers.

It is usually a walk that we all enjoy, but it was more “let’s get this over with” kind of walk this morning. At that point I knew that I wasn’t going to run 8-9 miles outside in that kind of weather.

Yes, I am getting wimpy.

So I headed down to Planet Fitness and ran in shorts and a t-shirt in comfortable climate controlled conditions on the treadmill.

No, I did not do the 8-10 I had originally thought about. The first two were on one treadmill (I forgot to stop the watch) and I had to do a quick BR break at 2.0 miles, when I got back, I switched treadmills to one I prefer and did another 5.0.

I maintained a steady 6.8 mph for 4.0 miles, then did 2.0 miles at 7.0 mph and the last mile I did some race pace .10 strides at 8.6 mph, with the last one at 9.1 mph. I felt good, but mentally, just didn’t have it in me to go any further today on the treadmill.

I have gotten used to doing the longer runs outside and will be doing a bit further as we get into better weather.

My right foot is really liking the EE width and I think there is some healing going on now that it isn’t being scrunched all the time. While it doesn’t feel quite right at times it is feeling better for longer and longer periods when I am running. It will take more than a couple of weeks to recover from years of abuse, but I do notice a huge difference between putting on the EE width shoes and going back to my old D-width ones.

I hate to even put the D’s on anymore.

So a pretty good run on the treadmill and then a long afternoon nap, since it was too damn cold outside to do any projects.

Yes, it was a pretty great day.

  1. I’m more wimpy. Some days, even when the sun is shining and it’s in the 40s, I still wonder if I can’t just run in the gym so that I don’t have to wear outside clothes. Sigh.
Looks like a great treadmill run!

    1. I can tell winter is almost over, I am getting antsy to run more outside, but also know that for crappy weather the treadmill is better for me to run on. Also if I am attempting to hit a specific pace or workout I find that I am more likely to hit it on the treadmill than I am outside. The treadmill is a great training tool, but it does get tedious to use and you have to callous the brain a little to use it for longer running.

      1. yup. all true. I like to use it the most to feel more confident about a specific pace, as if the treadmill can do some of the work for me. But one does have to be careful!

      2. Yup. Long runs take callousing anyway. And I really like the way I can control my pace on a treadmill. But I have to careful about using it too much.

  2. No shame in choosing to run indoors – ever! For me, no treadmill means run outside or not at all. So I run outside, regardless of the weather. I have yet to hate it this winter, with my hands only getting uncomfortably cold once (back in early November I miscalculated on gloves) … so being comfortable means happy runner πŸ™‚
