Twice – RunLog 10-20-17

I ran twice today, neither of which was very far – both were just a mile, but at the same time they answered some of my Chi Running questions about cadence and how leaning forward makes a difference.

Let’s be real I don’t care what style of form improvement program, system, practice or whatever you use, the words effortless, should never be included in the marketing or other descriptions of how to improve your running. Running no matter what how efficient you run, it is still work.

Got that out of the way.

The first run I messed up in starting the metronome again and finally got it going about half way through when I took the time to figure out what I was doing wrong. Once I got the metronome figured out, I managed to keep a lot closer to the 180 cadence that is the goal for Chi Running.

On the second run, I was able to start the metronome correctly at the start and whether I was running slower or faster, I was able to maintain a 180 pace and used the lean/lengthen/shorten stride to run faster/slower. That part of Chi Running does work it seems, if you are lifting your heels and extending your legs behind you. Extending your stride is the big difference while maintaining the cadence.

My run wasn’t always smooth or jar-free landings, but there were a couple of times that I did feel the “magic”. I stopped thinking and just ran, but as good as it felt, I was still working hard and could not maintain the form or effort that is still necessary to maintain the focus or pace.

Chi Running is definitely not effortless, but it is much more efficient and does not require as much effort that is necessary when using my old heel-first landing running style.

A very good day of running and learning a bit more about how Chi Running works. It is not magic or anything else, there is a bit of hype (like any of the change your form programs), but there is also quite a bit of stuff that seems to work well for me – so far.

My right hip is still in the healing stage, so I am not running anything further than 1-2 miles yet. The proof will be in 2-3 months to see where I am then.
