Today was a non-running day, not so much because outside the conditions were crappy – even though they were. That snow, sleet, rain, freezing rain, kind of stuff that keeps you off the road any way you look at it.
No, I would have taken today off no matter what. After yesterday’s treadmill run and having to stop because of discomfort in my lower back, it was time to take a day off and let things calm down a bit. That trying to be smarter thing that I am not usually all that good at. So I didn’t run today – which is a good thing.
However, I will not say that I just sat on the couch with the heating pad attached to sore spot.
I got a lot of reading done, I finished up my re-reading of Jonathan Beverly’s – Your Best Stride, for the second time in a week, which I think will have a pretty big impact on my running going forward and I might do a book review on it next week if the stars align. I also re-read a few portions of books that have had a big impact on me in the past: Danny Abshire’s – Natural Running and Matt Fitzgerald’s – 80/20 Running and a different book – Run.
Which means that I have a lot of theories, philosophies, drills and techniques wandering around in my head right now, but I have a feeling that most things are getting sorted out and I will move forward with Harold’s running technique. 🙂
It also gave me some things to focus on when it comes to strengthening and stretching (when to do them). So of course I had to experiment and see which ones that the back would let me do and which ones I find kind of useless. A few years back, I watched a YouTube video of some Kenyan runners doing drills and always thought that it would be cool to add some of what they do to my my old fart workout routines.

It is only six or so minutes long and kicked my arse and showed me how freaking uncoordinated I actually am. Now to keep doing it and see if I can dance any better, because that is almost what it is dancing and having fun while working out. There are some things I did pretty well on and others, let’s just say, I had to use an alternate exercise. However, I can see the value of doing this video 3-4 times a week. I would have much quicker feet and that is something I am going to work on improving – I need it.
Now if only I was as young as the kids in the video again, with what I know now. That WOULD be a dangerous combination. 🙂
Then I did some body-weight workout and stretching – getting better at holding the poses on some of those.
As the afternoon went on, I decided that I needed to get on the elliptical and do at least 20 minutes. I found a Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim video and went to explore the Grand Canyon. I did learn that on the elliptical I have to keep my feet pressed in against the inside of the foot rest, otherwise my hips don’t like me as much. Once I figured that out, everything felt fine and I worked up a nice sweat. This is going to be the other thing that I incorporate into my training on days that I don’t get to walk behind the snowblower. 🙂
Actually, I plan to start doing the elliptical for 20-30 minutes in the late afternoon on most days. I am serious enough that I have added in a column on my 2018 running log for elliptical mileage and will be keeping track of how many miles I do on the elliptical in addition to my running. While they are not equivalent to running miles, they are still miles should figure into my training totals and workload during a week. Plus on days like today, when it is so horrible outside that I don’t even want to drive, it will make me feel as though I am still getting my miles in – a bit of psych stuff, but hey if it works.
While today was a nice “rest” day, I have a feeling that tomorrow is going to be a long one. The ice/sleet/rain storm that went through today is going to have to be “cleaned up” and get things ready for the Christmas Day storm that is forecasted as of now for 8-12 inches of the delightful white stuff. I gotta feeling that once Christmas is done I am not going to be thinking of that white shit as too frigging delightful for the rest of the winter. 😉
The good thing is that all this rest today, did mean that my back feels a lot better than it did when I woke up this morning. Maybe I just needed a little of this kind of rest to get things limbered up. 🙂
