Week in Review 9/23/12

Track Photo

I have been fairly pain-free in my hamstrings, periformis and right hip, so I thought it would be a good time to try actually running in my Altra Instinct’s, instead of just slogging along in them (which I have done a few time lately).

Initially, I was slapping the ground in the Instinct’s, it was almost like I hadn’t ever run in them before. After about 1/4 mile, I started to feel more comfortable and at about the 1/2 mile point my stride started to become much smoother and finally after a mile I started to feel comfortable in them again.

I can tell when I am running well with good, because I am running quietly and smoothly.

Overall, my run down back was a good run, after that tough first mile, I was able to maintain a decent pace, after I smoothed out and didn’t feel as though I working nearly as hard as I have been. The best part was that none of the aches or pains that I previously thought might be attributable to way I run in the Altra’s, were evident when I got done!

I like the Altra Instinct’s a lot and am going to try running a little bit more in them this week.

RunLog 9-23-12

Today was the first run in my Altra’s that actually felt right in a long time. I am still a little hesitant to use the Instinct’s for double-digit runs, because of when I get tired I tend to revert to more of a rear-foot landing, but we will see how it goes as I run in them more.

My Favorite post from the week: A Challenge For Other Runners

Weight

I bounced between 144 and 148, I haven’t been under 145 since 1985 and is a little lower than I want to be for this point in my training cycles. Next year for the marathon I want to be around 140, but right now I want to stay right around 145-150.

Injuries

No real injuries, but I have continued to experience some discomfort in my hamstrings, butt cheeks (periformis) and right hip – but hopefully they are getting better.

Running Shoes

Newton Gravity

They now have 295 miles on them and are starting to shoe some real wear on the very front of the shoes and there is a clicking noise when I run on the right shoe. So I think they are starting to show their miles. They have been good shoes and I think I can get a few more runs out them, but they are on the down side. I have run some good times on my long runs in them.

Altra Instinct

Now have 144 on them. Since the Newton’s are really starting to get worn, I am going to try running in my Altra’s for runs up to 6 miles, to get used to really running in them again.

Adidas Adizero Sonic 3

No runs in them this week.

Adidas Vigor TR

No runs in them this week, but I know from now on that I will be using them on trails, they do make a difference.

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

The reality is that

I now know that my running form continues to contribute to my discomfort in the back of my upper legs – my butt cheeks and hips. As I worked to I correct this, hopefully, the discomfort seems to be going away.

AVR Week In Review–9/16/12

P9160009This was the best week of running weather-wise of the year! Fall is definitely in the air at nights it is getting into the 40’s and and 60’s/70’s during the day. I know that I love running in this weather!

Today I think I found out some of the reason for my hip hurting so much lately and you can read about it in my daily runlog post from today.

Overall, it was one of the better weeks I have had in a while and it felt good to get back over 50 miles again and get back on the track to work on running faster than I am used to.

My Favorite post from the week: The Power of “I WILL”!

Weight

I bounced between 146 and 150, which is where I want to stay. Especially, since my goal weight for the year was 155!

Injuries

No real injuries, but I have continued to experience a lot of discomfort in my hamstrings, butt cheeks (periformis) and right hip – not enough to make me stop running, but enough to not be totally comfortable when I run.

Running Shoes

Newton Gravity

They now have 261 miles on them and no real wear on the soles. They are becoming my go to running shoes, especially for the roads. I seem to run very comfortably and a little faster in them, than I do with other shoes. Although I don’t consider the Gravity’s to be a “perfect” shoe, they have made it so that I want to look a lot closer at another pair of Newton’s, when it comes time to look for new shoes in a month or two.

Altra Instinct

Now have 133 on them. I took them out of the closet and ran a few runs in the Altra’s, including some trail running. They are good for paths or dirt roads, but on single-track, rocky, sandy, or muddy trails, they are not the best solution. They are definitely more road shoes. I plan to alternate them with my Gravity’s over the next few weeks to see how they feel in comparison.

I now know that my running form is contributing to my discomfort in the back of my upper legs – my butt cheeks and hips. When I correct this, hopefully, the discomfort will go away.

I finished the Bond Brook 5K Trail Race series for me and improved my time each race, so I was happy with that, even though I didn’t break 26:00 for the course.

AVR–Week In Review 9/9/12

Running Form 9-9-12Today’s run

I went out for an easy 5.0 miler and didn’t push the pace at all during the run. The weather was mid-60’s and a light wind out of the north – it felt good. My splits were:

  • Mile 1: 8:25
  • Mile 2: 17:09 (8:44)
  • Notta Road Turnaround: 21:13 (4:03)
  • Mile 3: 25:16 (4:03)
  • Mile 4: 34:03 (8:46)
  • Mile 5: 43:15 (9:12)

I felt really comfortable the entire run, without pushing myself. Nice easy day.

Week In Review–9/2/12

IMG_0230This week was highlighted by taking 4 days off to rest my hamstrings and right hip. I have been fighting these and other little aches and pains for the past 3 weeks or so, and I just got tired of hurting every time I ran.

So I took some time off and am coming back slowly with 3.1 yesterday and 4.0 today. Although I am trying to run a bit quicker than I have in the past.

I definitely needed the time down and I am feeling a lot better during my runs than I was!

Also today I decided to publicly announce my major running goal for 2013 – to run the Marine Corps Marathon, but here is the kicker to go for a sub 03:30:00 and qualify for Boston. It was a big deal to make this decision public, but at the same time it will keep me honest.

I also started to really do my stretches every night and am trying to do a plank a day. Yes I am moving to do more than just running Smile.

Weight

For some reason at the start of the week I got down to 145 for a day, but for the most part I bounced between 147 and 149. Which I still think is great, since my goal weight for the year was 155!  Even going down to New York City and eating differently than usual, I stayed under 150, so that was pretty good.

Injuries

No real injuries, but I have experienced a lot of discomfort in my hamstrings and right hip – enough to make me shut it down for 4 days. The time off, seemed to help and I am hoping that it does make a difference and I can be running without the discomfort. I continued to use a rolling-pin on my hip and while it was painful as hell, but after I get done, my hip does feel better.

Running Shoes

Adidas Adizero Sonic 3

The Sonic 3 are doing a great job, but they just seem slower, for the amount of effort that I am putting into the run. They are an 75% shoe, they do most every thing good enough, but not anything really well. They are an all purpose shoe and if I had to use only one pair of shoes to do everything, these are a pair that I would definitely take a close look at. But as a specific purpose shoe such as a race or trail shoe, I don’t think they quite do what I want.

Altra Instinct

In the closet for a few of weeks, until my hamstrings and hips are completely feeling better and then I will run my shorter runs in them, to see if the problems I encountered were caused by the zero drop or if it was something else. I do like the shoe and miss running in them and am looking forward to getting them back out of the closet.

Adidas Vigor TR

No runs in them this week.

Newton Gravity

Today I ran 4.0 miles and didn’t push real hard and yet was able to run at an 8:11 pace and a little faster if I focused on running faster. I have been running in my old Newton Gravities and I am starting to remember, why I liked them so much – now that they don’t cut into my ankle. I feel fast in them and they reward me when I run with good form and let me know when I am not

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

The reality is that

the 4 days off have been been a good thing, my hamstrings and hip are getting better and I am starting to run a lot more comfortably. I still notice them a little when I am going at a faster pace, but it is not at the level it was a couple of weeks ago or even early last week.

Week In Review 8-26-12

What a fantastic week!

I ran in Central Park and crossed it off my Bucket List.

I got to meet a lot of great people while I was in New York City for the weekend and have such a fantastic opportunity that I will talk a lot more about on September 17th.

As much as I whined and moaned about missing Maine, while I was in NYC, I did have a lot of fun and learned so much. Very glad that I got to go.

After the flight back to Maine, we walked around one of my favorite places to run – Back Bay in Portland, Maine

When I got home, I started to watch the Red Sox and promptly fell asleep. Not because the game was boring, but because I was exhausted.

It was a long weekend and while it was a great one, it took me way out of my comfort zone.  I know that when I do something new, have to operate at a high level or go someplace I haven’t been before, that after it is over – I am done.  Getting out of our comfort zones are something we really need to do and unless something happens to make us push the envelope, we typically just go down that comfortable path.

I needed that power nap to recharge my batteries – especially the mental ones.

After I woke up – almost an hour later, I decided to run 4.0 miles, just to get rid of the cobwebs and get the body moving. The run was slow and easy, which I needed, I felt pretty darn good, but just didn’t have a lot energy or focus. I was still thinking about all the stuff I have to over the next few weeks :-).

Running Shoes

Adidas Adizero Sonic 3

The Sonic 3 are doing a great job, I took them on trails, dirt roads, roads and 2 long runs and didn’t have any issues with my feet or the shoes. They simply have done everything I have asked of them. I have 87.1 miles on them now and because of all of the stuff going on last week, I didn’t get a chance to do my usual 50 mile review and will do the review at 100 miles.

Altra Instinct

Week In Review 8-19-12

This was a ramp-up week, to get back up where I want – around 45 miles for the week, after my cut-back last week and I actually did it.

The aches in my hamstrings and right hip seem to be getting better (slowly) and if I stopped running for 4-5 days would be a lot better, but I will keep running and just go a little slower and watch my mileage.

Weight

I bounced between 148 and 150, which is great, since my goal weight was 155!  I am holding pretty steady on my weight, which is what I want.

Injuries

No real injuries, but I have experienced a lot of discomfort in my hamstrings and right hip. They are starting to feel a lot better and I am running a lot more comfortably this weekend compared to last weekend. I did use a rolling-pin on my hip and while it was painful as hell, but after I got done, my hip did feel better and today I ran a lot easier than I have in a couple of weeks.

Running Shoes

Adidas Adizero Sonic 3

I decided to go ahead and get a pair of traditional neutral trainers and decided on the Sonic 3’s. So far I am liking them a lot. They are what I call a 90% shoe, they do 90% of what I want from a pair of shoes in a variety of conditions. They are not a strict road racer, not a trail shoe, not a track shoe, but I wouldn’t hesitate to use them in any of those situations. I have run a couple of double-digit runs in them and they protect my knees quite well, they feel comfortable  and have enough toe room for my toes to splay comfortably. So far I am happy with them.

Altra Instinct

I put them in the closet for a couple of weeks to see if they are part of the reason for my hamstrings and hips being sore. There is nothing wrong with these shoes, it comes down to figuring out if zero drop is compatible with my personal running style. I run differently in the Altra’s than I do in shoes with a higher stack height.

Adidas Vigor TR

No runs in them this week.

Newton Gravity

No runs in them this week.

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

The reality is that

my hamstrings and hip are slowly getting better and I am starting to run more comfortably, after my cut-back week a couple of weeks ago. I got yet another pair of new shoes – the Adidas Adizero Sonic 3 and so far I have been happy with them.

Week In Review–8/12/12

P8100005This was my cut-back week and I actually did it. I stopped running when I got about 50% of my weekly total lately. This rest was definitely needed, I had a lot of little aches and pains that accumulated during my increased mileage of the past few months.

Hopefully, this will let me help my body recover and this week I am pretty sure that will stay about 75% of my 50 mile a week goal Smile.

Three Things Running

  1. Cut-back Week: I did something that I needed to do when I only ran 25 miles this week and gave my body a chance to start to recuperate from the increased mileage over the past few months.
  2. Bond Brook 5K Trail Race: On Thursday, I ran in the trail race series and even though I didn’t think I was running better, I beat my previous time by a good deal, even though I really slowed down the last 1/2 mile.
  3. No Marathon This Year: The past week gave me a big indicator that my body is not ready for the rigors of training for a full marathon yet. I have been back to running for around a year and still need to have more of a base to run a marathon the way that I want to. So I decided to not run one this year. Decision Made on my Fall Marathon Plans

Weight

I bounced between 148 and 150, which is great, since my goal weight was 155! At the family reunion today, someone who has always been a lot skinnier than me, said, “gee you are getting skinnier than I am”, made me feel pretty darn good.

Injuries

No real injuries, just a some discomfort in my hamstrings and right hip that I want to look after, before they become an larger issue, along with couple of nagging aches and pains that are always going to be there. These little aches and pains are why I decided do a cut-back week this week and another lower mileage week this coming week.

Running Shoes

Altra Instinct

The Instinct’s have been a really great shoe so far, there very little sign of wear on the soles and after talking with people that I really trust, I figured out what I was doing that irritated my hamstrings had nothing to do with the shoes Smile.

Adidas Vigor TR

These are my primary trail running shoes (Initial Review & Run in Adidas Vigor TR). I ran once in them in the Bond Brook 5K Trail Race, Thursday night and they just do everything I have asked of them. I am starting to use them as my walking shoes and trail shoes, just because they are so comfortable. The way that the feel is making me think about looking closer at a pair of Adidas next time I need a pair of road shoes???

Newton Gravity

I ran in them once this week – a recovery run and to see if they helped my hamstrings calm down a little and they might have helped, I don’t paw-back in them

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

The reality is that

That either my shoes or the lack of rest is causing some hamstring issues – actually it turned out that it was my form in my Instinct’s (I paw-back in them) and I have to focus on Landing, Lifting and Leaning, which I have been dong this week and this focus on my form has really helped my hammies.

Week in Review 8/5/12

P8030003I am pretty dog gone tired after July’s heat and the 236 miles I put in last month.

I pretty certain that I set an all-time personal best month’s total for me and now I need to give my body some down- time to recuperate.

This was also my week to find out if I would run a marathon or not this year. While I think that I have pretty much made my decision, however, I still want to see how I feel after tomorrow’s long run to make sure.

I did really great at the start of the week, but all of those July miles, finally caught up to me and my hamstrings or was it the change to the Altra Instincts and the zero drop, which slightly altered my running for which caused the hammies to bark at me a little. Probably a combination of the two and I had to take a Friday and Sunday off from running to give them some rest.

Three Things Running

  1. Still Over 40 Miles for the Week: I came within a few miles of having another 50 mile week again. I had planned on a 60+ mile week but couldn’t maintain the workload needed to get there.
  2. Bond Brook 5K Trail Race: On Thursday, I ran a trail race and even though I didn’t think I was running better, I beat my previous time by almost a minute. I do like trail races, will be doing more of them in the future.
  3. Pushing too hard: Over the past month I have pushed my body to see what I could still do and re-learned that I need more than one day of rest in a month. I am not 25 anymore and I need more recovery time than I was giving myself, so that is next week’s plan is to have a nice recovery week to get ready for the fall racing season.

Injuries

No real injuries, just a little discomfort in my hamstrings that I want to look after, before they become an larger issue, along with couple of nagging aches and pains that are always going to be there.

Running Shoes

Altra Instinct

Here are my First Impressions and 50 Mile reviews of the Altra Instinct’s. They are still my primary running shoe, but late last week and this I have noticed a soreness in my hamstrings that I haven’t had at all this year, before the Instincts. The Instinct’s do cause me to run slightly differently, with the zero drop design and I am wondering if this change is causing some difficulties with my hamstrings?

Adidas Vigor TR

These are my primary trail running shoes (Initial Review & Run in Adidas Vigor TR). I ran once in them in the Bond Brook 5K Trail Race, Thursday night and they do everything I have asked of them. I am starting to use them as my walking shoes and trail shoes, just because they are so comfortable.

Newton Gravity

I ran in them once this week – a recovery run and to see if they helped my hamstrings calm down a little and they might have helped. I would have to run in them for a few days to really figure it out. Which I might do this week.

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

The reality is that

That either my shoes or the lack of rest is causing some hamstring issues. So I am going to try resting them for a couple of days (until the discomfort goes away) and then do some more trouble shooting to find the cause.

Now that July is over I can go ahead and get back to resting more often, like every Sunday off, unless there is a race.

Week In Review–7/29/12

P7240156I made it back from Minnesota, safe and sound, which I thought was a good thing. Smile

I am not a big traveller so as much as I enjoyed myself out there, seeing the grandkids, my daughter and her husband, it was great to be back home.

While I was out there, I might have helped create a new runnah, errr runner in my son-in-law. He even went out yesterday and bought a pair of new running shoes. Guess he wants to beat the old man, the next time I go out to Minnesota and he has even told me he will contribute a post or two about how his running is going.

Three Things Running

  1. Still Over 40 Miles for the Week: I cam within a few miles of having another 50 mile week, but this was supposed to be my cutback week, so I didn’t push to get over 50. The base mileage I am putting together is starting to really pay off and I can feel the difference when I run.
  2. First Race Since April 28th: On Saturday, I ran in a small/local 5K and ran a 22:03/7:06 pace and was very happy about how I did. Definitely could have gone a little faster, if I had pushed more from the start and not lost focus on the hill coming back out of the Sidney recreation area. Next time.
  3. Running Streak: I purposely ended my running streak on Monday, it was starting to get too long and was becoming a little too important. It felt good to end it. I just don’t like have a long streak they seem to become the reason for running, instead of just running to run.

These are my primary trail running shoes (Initial Review & Run in Adidas Vigor TR). I ran once in them over on the Colby College Trails and had a blast.

Newton Gravitas

No runs in them this week

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

Surprisingly, without a whole lot of speed work, I almost attained my new annual goal of breaking 22:00 for a 5K at the race this Saturday.

The reality is that

I have had a blast out in Minnesota visiting my daughter, her husband and the grandkids. I look forward to the next time I visit.

Hopefully, there was some progress on the different doors that are opening for me and should have more answers by my birthday in a couple of weeks. Just have to be patient.

Week In Review 7/22/12

P7200035I have been out in Minnesota since Thursday visiting my daughter and seeing my grandkids. So I haven’t really been online all that much.

It has been pretty cool seeing my 4 grandkids and doing stuff with them. We have gone to the zoo, parks and just been really busy doing stuff.

I also did a little housekeeping on the blog and its appearance Yep A New Theme–The Old One Wasn’t Me and New Blog Header and What the Photos Mean before I left. I really like the changes and believe that A Veteran Runnah looks a lot better now and it reflects me a much more than a plain white minimalist theme.

My favorite post from the past week was “Do not go Gentle into that Good Night”.

I also pulled a real bonehead stunt and left my gym bag someplace and lost my Nike Free Run+3 and a bunch of running clothes, so I had to buy a new pair of running shoes, a few weeks ahead of what my plan originally was.

Running Summary This Week

Weekly Summary 7-22-12

RunLog Week of 7/22/12

Three Things Running
  1. Over 50 Again: Three weeks in a row over 50 miles running for the week. I am feeling really good in spite of the heat and the mileage. I think there was only 1-2 days that I haven’t run in temps under 90 degrees, so I am getting used to the heat.
  2. Running In Minnesota: Actually it is easier to run in Minnesota than it is in Maine, there are more places to run and I really haven’t had to worry about traffic as much as I do in Maine, which I really do like.
  3. Running while on vacation: I really have surprised myself while on vacation, I have run every day I have been here, usually I wimp out and don’t run too much on vacation. I even ran a couple of times with my son-in-law.

I have been running every day since 6/24, so it is almost time for a break or should I just try to finish out July and see if I can go over 200 miles for the month Smile.

This week in two words: Grand Children

Weight

I am bouncing between 148 and 152, which is great and these lower weights feels better for running. However, I have a feeling that I will be a little higher on scale when I get back from Minnesota. To be honest I have been eating a little differently than I do at home. However, I am not too worried about it, once I get back on my regular routine, it will go away pretty quickly.

Injuries

No real injuries, just a couple of nagging aches and pains that are getting better.

Running Shoes

Nike Free Run +3

I ran 17 in them on Monday, but when travelling to Minnesota, I lost them, so just after I get them broke in to the point where I was beginning to really like them, I no longer have them. Which turned into a real pain in the butt.

Nike Free 4.0 v2

I have over 300 miles on these shoes and am starting to really notice more aches and pains in my knees and hips after I run in them, not major problems yet, but still I am starting to notice the difference over the last 50 or so miles. I still think that they have been the best shoes for me that I have run in, in a long, long time.

Altra Instincts

After I lost the Free Run+3, I only had my Vigor trail shoes and they don’t really do well for running a lot on pavement. So I went to Run n Fun in Burnsville to take a look at the shoes they had. I tried on a couple pair and they had the Altra Instinct’s which I had really wanted to try.

After trying them on and comparing them to some others, I decided to buy them and so far I am glad that I did. I already have over 20 miles on them and they have felt great. Here is my initial review and first runs in the Instincts.

Adidas Vigor TR

I bought these to be my primary trail running shoes (Initial Review & Run in Adidas Vigor TR). Other than wearing them on the flight out here, I didn’t get to run any trails this week.

Newton Gravitas

No runs in them this week

Running Goals

I reviewed my 2012 running goals 2012 Mid-Year Goal Review and Update and updated them.

The reality is that

I have had a blast out in Minnesota visiting my daughter, her husband and the grandkids. It has really been a very enjoyable visit! However, I believe that like fish, after 3 days relatives need to get going, so I am headed home tomorrow. Three days is just enough to not be a burden, but long enough to have some fun and relax. Who knows maybe my son-in-law will start running a little after I leave.

Hopefully, this week I will also find out whether some doors I have been looking at have opened or if I need to look at a couple of others that might be coming up soon
