Week In Review 8-31-14

A good training week with a double-digit run, speed work and some faster sessions with Bennie made this week a really good training week. I had thought about doing a race in Augusta on Saturday, but Friday’s long run results let me know in no uncertain terms that racing was not on the agenda the next day.

I am noticing that I am not writing as many posts on my daily training, especially when they are just recovery days, where nothing special happens. They were just getting too routine and didn’t/don’t add any real value to the blog. So I imagine that I will continue that trend.

I did get a couple of 50 mile reviews out one pair that worked really well for me and another pair that didn’t work the way that I wanted.

Also I explained why I still bother to write reviews on close-out and older shoes that I get to run in, which you can read about here. But to sum it up quickly — I think I am like a lot of other runners who do not have big running shoe budgets and know that last year’s models work quite well for me and I am interested in how those shoes worked. So writing about older shoes is something I think other runners will be interested in, as well as the newer models.

Why Review Old Running Shoe Models

Why in the hell are you still doing reviews on older than dirt running shoes?

You know what I am talking about those running shoes that I write about, which are last year’s or older models.

Although I love the newest and greatest running shoes as much or more than most runners, they are not the shoes that I actually usually get to run in.

Whaddayamean?

You see, I don’t work for any running shoe brand (though I do have my favorites), a sporting goods chains, local running store or even have a popular blog where I get a variety of free promotional shoes to review (although I did get free pair of shoes for working a display booth for a brand I like, back in June).

Oh, I have had my chances to do some of this stuff and last year, when I retired, those kind of opportunities disappeared.

Like the majority of runners, I pay for most of my running shoes or get them as gifts for my birthday/Christmas.

Which means many of those newest and greatest running shoes are also budget breakers.

Being retired and on a fixed budget, means that those new shoes costing $160, hell $100 or more for a pair of running shoes is simply more than I am usually willing to spend on new shoes and more than most people want to shell out for a present. Week In Review 8-24-14

Running with Bennie this week has been an adventure and 14.52 miles of running together, but we have had fun and he is making me much more consistent than I would be otherwise about my running. My run streak is up to 21 Days and I am not sure when it will end – probably when I get to feeling more tired.

For now, I am feeling pretty good and upbeat (well now that the race is over).

If you read my Run for the Fallen 5K recap, you will understand a little more about my struggles with race anxiety and how it affects my attempts to run in races outside of the local area. The bottom-line is that I made it to the starting line and finished the race with the best 5K time I have had this year :-).

Run for the Fallen 5K – Recap 8-24-14

All things considered, I did better than I thought I did.

Although when I finished the race and looked at my watch, I was a little disappointed with the time and my effort, but when I got to thinking about it while writing this post – I did just fine.

There were a LOT of positives to take-away from the race!

  1. Honoring the Fallen – the ringing of the bell after reading the Fallen’s name part of the memorial service was very powerful for me. (just a couple of tears were shed)
  2. Making it to the starting line today!!! Yes, I had some serious doubts about whether I would, over the past couple of days and even almost left around 9:30 – due to some frustrations I was having – my problems no one else’s.
  3. It was the fastest I have run a 5K this year – 22:33
  4. I had a right on pace first mile – 6:39

  5. I was smart and didn’t push through, when my hamstring started to tighten up after the first mile, I pulled back until it stopped barking really loudly.
  6. In other words, I finished the race uninjured.

When a Run Is Not About Running – RunLog 8-22-14

Sometimes a run, is not made by the actual run, but other things that happen before or during that run.

Today when I was running up in Newport, what happened beyond running that was important.

What in the hell are you yammering on about Harold?

Today I went north to take Dad out for lunch and spend some time together, which I admit that I don’t do enough. We had a great meal, swapped stories, talked about what has gone on in our lives and just enjoyed being together.

After dropping Dad off, I drove back to Newport to do a 3-4 mile easy run around Newport. Lunch was not kind to me and I could feel lunch sitting like a big log in my stomach, you know how well Chile Cheese Omelet, home fries and a Coconut Cream pie mix together – not well.

Instead of parking in front of my old home, I parked down at the swim front – a place that I spent so much time of my youth and yep a lot has changed there.

As I was running past my old coaches’ house, Lyle and his wife were outside working. I haven’t seen him in oh at least 15 years, so I stopped and talked for a little while. It was great to catch up with him, especially since he was my P.A.L. basketball coach starting way back when I was in 4th grade through 7th grade and I played basketball in his back yard for many years.

Week In Review 8-17-14

I have been busy this week, running more miles than I have in a while, reading a lot, writing a little more than usual, got a new pair of daily trainers, sent back my TomTom GPS watch and doing a lot of thinking about the book I got for my birthday Run Simple by Duncan Larkin and how I have incorporated (already) some of the suggestions in the book.

When I was first writing this post – I hadn’t decided if I want to do a complete book review or not, but my first, but not my last reading of this book has been a good thing, it is getting me to think about how I can simplify my running some more.

I was going to do a quick two paragraph review here, but it grew and grew, so I will end up writing a full book review on Run Simple, later this week :-). It is a good book and worth taking a look at, no I don’t agree with everything he says, but he did make me think about why I do some of the things I do and gave me some great tidbits that will help me focus my training even more.

On Friday, I was running into Augusta for my long run and suddenly a white Toyota pulls in front of me and TheWife says get in something is wrong with Isabelle (our 11 year cat). We rush her to the vet, she gets some shots, pills and although she is doing better, she is still not quite herself. So we are keeping an eye on how she is doing and spoiling her rotten.

Week In Review – A Good Week 8-10-14

The week was a good one, tired yes.

I should be, I am trying to get used to being back at 40 miles a week again and part of this is running with Bennie, so many days I am running twice a day. Which can be tough, but as I get back to running regularly again, it will be a good thing.

Thank you everyone who wished me a happy birthday this week and I am enjoying the additions to my running gear and books. I got a couple of books on Saturday morning and the one that I wanted to read the most was one of them.

I started reading at lunch and by 10:00 P.M., I had finished it. It gave me a little more insight to the man, that I had a grip and grin with last Sunday. He shows that it is okay to be driven to succeed, but at the same time you don’t have to be an asshat to do it.

Sometimes You Gotta Show Up

This morning I ran with Bennie, a nice easy 2.5 miler down back, nothing special, just a nice run  on a beautiful day.

What was surprising was that I didn’t run the Doc & Mardie 5K over in Waterville this morning, which I had planned on doing all summer, it was one of my goal races.

Hell this post should be a Doc & Mardie 5K race recap or even a quick RunLog entry about my Bennie Run, instead it is something else completely.

Why?

The truth is that I just “never” got around to putting in the race registration. I know Patrick, the race director pretty well and have volunteered at the Quarry Road Trail Race series with him for the past couple of years. Which also means that I know a lot of the runners who were running the race this morning.

I knew it would be a good time, although running up the hill by Colby, would be a pain-in-the-ass. However, the after-the-race camaraderie of the event would more than make up for the tough course.

However, for some reason, I just couldn’t bring myself to register for this race, yesterday I did a tough long run (which I do not do before a goal race) or even go this morning and just do a race-day registration.

I had plenty of opportunities.

TheWife even asked last night and this morning if I was going and I made up some excuse about having to put the front door back together (which could have waited until I got home), last week I had gone down to Portland to see Meb and didn’t want to do two weekends in a row and best of all – I just didn’t feel like it.

The bottom-line was that I didn’t go run the Doc and Mardie 5K today, even though I planned to and wanted to.

What to hell happened then?

Is Aging Really All That Bad

Yeah, my 57th birthday is this week and while it isn’t one of those milestone years – it does mean that I am that much closer to being 60 than 50.

Sure on my birthday I will enjoy the attention, presents (more running stuff), gift cardss (even more running stuff), a chance to carb load (cake, ice cream, etc.) and everything else that goes along with aging another year.

However, it ain’t all peaches and cream.

Getting older after a certain age no matter how you look at it – sucks…

aging changes your life and what you can do.

Although aging/getting older sure as hell is better than being dead, getting old is not always easy or for wimps.

This is not a post where I whine, piss, moan and groan about the vagaries of getting old (oh I might a little) – I am just going to talk about the realities of some things I have experienced as a result of my aging. Hopefully, you chuckle or nod your head along the way.

Yep, a frigging mind map – believe it or not, this is how I think.

Lots of things all convoluted around one central thought and if I don’t put it in something I can visualize, I go off on tangents and down more than a few rabbit holes.

Week In Review – A Good Week 8-3-14

Getting to see so many great people down in Portland yesterday and yeah, getting my picture taken with Meb was cool too.

Doing a couple of sessions with “real” speedwork (at least for me) and getting over 40 miles for the week – felt good. Yes, I am tired, but a good tired.

Getting my Spreadsheet caught back up…I like Strava a lot and plan to keep using it, but at the same time there is just something about having control over your running data and not be reliant on a site, company or brand to make sure your data is always available to you.
